INDEPENDENCE – Donald Duane Cory was born Nov. 28, 1947 at Cedar Rapids, Iowa the son of Norman and Alice Hilmer Cory. He grew up in the Quasqueton-Rowley area and attended John Loecke School in Independence, Iowa.
Don worked as a janitor for the East Buchanan Schools for over 30 years, retiring, due to health, in 2002. While working at EB, Don loved going to all the home sporting events. He was a regular visitor of the downtown businesses in Winthrop for many years, could be seen on his bicycle picking up pop cans around town cleaning up the streets, and was especially fond of going on truck rides with Fairchilds and the Winthrop Elevator.
January, 2011 Don moved to Prairie Hills at Independence. He still enjoyed visiting with his many friends.
Donald Duane Cory, 68, of Independence entered into his eternal rest on Tuesday, May 3, 2016 at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers: Allen Cory, Carl Johnson and Harold Johnson.
Survivors include his three brothers: David (Barb) Cory of San Antonio, Texas; Ken (Sandy) Johnson of Independence, and Terry Johnson of Cedar Rapids; nieces and nephews: Damon (Kelly) Cory, Brooke Cory, Jason (Tevi) Cory, Rachelle Cory, Amanda (Rob) Opfer, Jeremy (Allison) Johnson DVM, Andrew (Amanda) Johnson; and many great nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 10, 2016 at the Church of Christ United in Winthrop with Pastor Dean Schlitter officiating. Casketbearers will be: Jeremy Johnson, Andrew Johnson, Rob Opfer, Steve Flaucher, Ron Crawford, Phil Fangman, Terry Fairchild, and Melvin Matteson. Interment will be in Wilson Cemetery east of Independence.
Visitation will be from 4 until 7 p.m. on Monday, May 9, 2016 at the Fawcett Funeral Home in Winthrop and after 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Church.
