Dorothy A. (Davis) Gates (1927 - 2017)


WATERLOO – Dorothy A. Gates, 89, of Waterloo, and formerly of rural Independence, died Saturday, Jan. 14, at the Northcrest Specialty Care Center in Waterloo.
Dorothy was born on October 24, 1927 in Waterloo, Iowa the daughter of Benjamin and Lucille Mae (Bard) Davis. On July 17, 1945 she married John Kenneth Gates in Savannah, Ill. She and John bought a farm in rural Independence in 1973.
Dorothy is survived by her children, Cindy Harris, Waterloo, Michael (Sue) Gates, Mt. Vernon, and Christi Hess, New Hampton; five grandchildren, and eleven great grandchildren; four sisters, Elsie (Joe) Westmoreland, Hawaii, Barbara (Jerry) Cummings, Lucerne Valley, Calif., Sandra (Sheldon) Sickler, San Diego, Calif., Jean (John) Sutton, Ore.; a brother Ralph Davis, Hawaii; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband John, and two brothers: Edward and Gary Davis.
Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20, at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence, with Rev Scott Meador officiating. Friends may call from 10 to services on Friday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence.
