Dorothy M. Hurdel, 97, Independence, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, at the Buchanan County Health Center, Independence, following a short illness.
Hurdel was born Jan. 8, 1913, in Lohrville, the daughter of Raymond and Elfa (Atherton) Gower. She graduated from high school in Rockwell City. She married Glen Garland Michaels on Feb. 17, 1934, in Fort Dodge, and were together until his death in 1984. She later married Ray Donald Hurdel on March 10, 1989, in Las Vegas, who preceded her in death in 2004.
Hurdel was a postal worker for 17 years, retiring in 1981.
Survivors include two daughters: Donna (Vergil) Williamson Foster, Independence, and Sharon (Eric) Cooper, Liverpool, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Wayne (Ruth) Gower, St. Charles, Ill.
In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers: Delbert and Dale Gower, and a sister, Mildred Rowe.
Private memorial services will be held at the White Funeral Home, Independence. Burial will be in Rockwell City. Online condolences may be left at www.White-MtHope.com.
