INDEPENDENCE - Doyle D. "Barney" Foland, 91, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Independence, died on Thursday, June 23, at his home following a short illness.
He was born on December 20, 1919, in Grand River, the son of George Wesley and Ollie Mae (Briner) Foland. During World War II, Mr. Foland served with the U.S. Army. On March 10, 1947, he and the former Ellen Virginia Smith were married at the Presbyterian Church in Independence. She preceded him in death in 2010.
Mr. Foland worked at the Rath Packing Company in Waterloo, until he retired. Mr. Foland enjoyed a range of activities. Outside, there was fishing, yard work, and gardening. Inside, there was joking with friends and Cardinals baseball games.
Mr. Foland is survived by two grandsons, Jonathon (Maddie) Cafferty of Cedar Rapids, and Daniel Foland of Chicago, Ill., and one great granddaughter, Melissa L. Cafferty. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, one son, David Foland, one daughter, Linda Cafferty, four sisters, and five brothers.
Funeral Services were held on Monday, June 27, at the White Funeral Home in Independence. Burial was in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence.
