INDEPENDENCE - Edmund F. Tabor, 88, of Independence, died Monday, April 11, at the Buchanan County Health Center, Independence.
Ed was born on Dec. 31, 1922, in Independence, the son of Harold J. and Mabel (Houck) Tabor. He was a 1940 graduate of the Independence High School, and a 1942 graduate of the Independence Junior College. On July 20, 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Army serving as a sergeant until his discharge in 1948. Following his discharge he enrolled at the University of Iowa receiving his Bachelor of Science Degree in Commerce in 1948. On Aug. 20, 1955, he was united in marriage to Geraldine E. Welsh, and the couple made their home in Independence where Ed became employed with the Independence Federal Bank for Savings serving as president for 20 years prior to his retirement in 1987.
He was a member of the Independence Lions Club, the Independence Rotary Club, served on the board of the Wapsipinicon Golf Club, the Independence Public Library, and Iowa Ham.
He is survived by his wife Geraldine; a son, Byron (Julie) Tabor, Cedar Rapids; a daughter, Paula Gerstenkorn, Waterloo; and a grandson, Dale Gerstenkorn Jr., Waterloo.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Elizabeth Plank, and a brother, Charles Tabor.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 14, at the Reiff Funeral Home and Crematory, Independence. Burial will be in St. John Catholic Cemetery, Independence. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, and from 8 a.m. until services Thursday at the funeral home.
