Edward W. Vanous (1924 - 2012)

INDEPENDENCE – Edward W. Vanous, 88 years old, of Independence, died on Sunday, Oct. 14, at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence. He was born on Feb. 29, 1924, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Joseph and Lydia (Umholz) Vanous. He attended the Johnson County country schools. On Oct. 15, 1950, he and the former Marie Anne Sebetka were married in Cedar Rapids. They farmed near Rowley, and Mr. Vanous never really retired. Farming was his life. He was a member of the Farm Bureau. Mr. Vanous did enjoy traveling and restoring old tractors of all kinds. He also was an animal lover and always had pets.
Mr. Vanous is survived by his wife of 62 years, Marie, one daughter, Carol (Fred) Kitzman of Swisher, three sons, Don Vanous (and his special friend, Julie Johnston) of Rowley, John (Cheryl) Vanous and Brian (Anita) Vanous, both of Quasqueton, 15 grandchildren, and many great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Karen Vanous, and one daughter-in-law, Penny Vanous.
Funeral Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 17, at the White Funeral Home in Independence, with Rev. Kevin Jennings officiating. Casket Bearers will be Tim Kitzman, Terrence Kitzman, Brett Vanous, Brad Vanous, Scott McMurrin, and Cory McMurrin. Burial will be in Czech National Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.
