WINTHROP – Elizabeth Wilhelmina Decker was born Dec. 29, 1922, at Manchester, the daughter of William Carl Zebuhr and Fay Lee Zebuhr. She attended the Coffins Grove Country School for grades 1 through 8 and graduated with the Manchester High School class of 1941. Her Normal Teacher Training was obtained from Cedar Falls Teachers College after which she taught for one year.
Elizabeth was united in marriage to Dale Joseph Decker on May 13, 1944, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Winthrop. The couple lived the rest of their lives on the family farm, east of Winthrop. Five children were born to this union: James, Patrick, Robert, Jean Anne, and Steven. Her loving family and enduring faith nurtured her and her love of farming sustained and nourished her family. Many included her as their friend, who enjoyed her enduring smile and peaceful nature. She was a long time member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Winthrop and a 50+ year member of the Catholic Daughters of America, Ascension Circle.
Lovingly held in her daughter, Jean Anne's arms, Elizabeth entered into her eternal rest on Monday, Dec. 10, at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester at nearly 90 years of age.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Dale in 1979; her son-in-law, Dave Griswold; her sister, Eleanor Fay Fleckenstein; and her brothers: William Zebuhr, Jr. and Lynn Zebuhr.
Her surviving family includes her five children: James (Laura) Decker of Kenneth City, Fla.; Patrick Decker of Winthrop; Robert (Kathy) Decker of Winthrop; Jean Anne Griswold of Manchester; and Steven (Georgia) Decker of Winthrop; five grandchildren, ten step grandchildren, and five great grandchildren; sister, Joan Stickley of Masonville; sister-in-law, Velma Zebuhr of Manchester; a special niece, Lori Zebuhr Hotz of Medford, Ore.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Mass was held Thursday, Dec. 13, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Winthrop with Father Dennis Cain officiating. Music was provided by Ann Slattery and St. Patrick's Choir. Lector was Shirley Schlichte. Casket bearers were: James Decker, Patrick Decker, Robert Decker, Steven Decker, Vincent Decker, Vincent Gallery, Craig Zebuhr, and Scott Zebuhr. Honorary bearers were: Joseph Gallery, Louis Gallery, Michael Gallery, Curt Zebuhr, Jan Schwarting, Cheryl Christinson, and her godchild, Krista Bergfeld.
Interment was in St. Patrick's Cemetery at Winthrop.
Friends called from 2:30 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, and until 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, at Fawcett Funeral Home in Winthrop. A scripture service was scheduled on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m.
