JESUP – Francis J. "Red" Ahles, 97, of West Village Care Center in Independence, and formerly of Jesup, died Saturday, March 13, 2010, at Allen Memorial Hospital, Waterloo, following a short illness. He was born Dec. 6, 1912, in Fox Township of Black Hawk County, Iowa, the son of John P. Ahles and Dorie (Youngblut) Ahles. On Jan. 17, 1934, he was united in marriage to Valeste carol Kratoska at St. Athanasius Catholic Church, Jesup. They were married 72 years before her death in 2006. They farmed south of Jesup for many years before retirement and moving to town. He attended school in Gilbertville and graduated eight grade before going to work full time.
Ahles is survived by one sister, Leona "Toni" Johnson of Waterloo, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, his parents; three brothers: Vincent Ahles, John "Jack" Ahles, Paul Ahles; three sisters, Josephine Pentzer Kayser, Peggy Robins, Marge Timmion and and Sharon Ormsby, a niece, whom he and Valeste raised, preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. – Wednesday, March 17, 2010, at St. Athanasius Catholic Church, Jesup. Burial will be at the Mt. Olivet Catholic Cemetery, Waterloo. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at the White Funeral Home, Jesup, IA, where there will be a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 3:00 p.m. and a Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday. Visitation will continue for an hour before services Wednesday at the Church. Memorials may be directed to Camp Courageous of Iowa at Monticello, or to the St. Athanasius School Endowment Fund in Jesup.
