Independence - George J. Joens, Sr., 97, of Independence, died Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2010, at East Towne Care Center in Independence from natural causes. He was born on Jan. 25, 1913, the son of Johannes and Anna Helena (Lausen) Joens. On July 2, 1936, he and the former Lelia Mae Goudy were married at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. She preceded him in death in 2009. They farmed until retiring. Mr. Joens was an active member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge #142 in Independence. He and Mrs. Joens were also members of the Polka Club of Northeast Iowa.
Mr. Joens is survived by one son, George (Dixie) Joens, Jr., of Brandon, and one daughter, Bonnie (Thomas) Haes of Vinton. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and one brother, Alvin (May) Joens of LaPorte City.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Patricia Bumgarner; two brothers and three sisters. Graveside services will be held at West View Cemetery in La Porte City at a later date.
