HUDSON - Gertrude A. "Gertie" O'Brian, 88, of Hudson, died Saturday, Oct. 10 at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home of cancer. She was born Aug. 20, 1921 in Buchanan County, the daughter of Leon and Alena (Anson) Van Tasell. She graduated from Rowley High School in 1939.
Gertie married Richard G. O'Brian April 20, 1946 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. He died July 29, 1999. She worked at KMart for 17 years retiring in 1984 and was a member of Community Church of Hudson.
Gertie is survived by two sons: Russell and his wife Celeste of Hudson, and Dean and his wife Paula of Topeka, KS; a daughter Donna Braatz of Waterloo. She is also survived by two grandchildren and seven step-grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and 20 step-great-grandchildren, 11 step-great-great-grandchildren, and a brother, Carl, and his wife, Eleanor Van Tasell, of Independence. She is preceded in death by a sister.
Services at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at Community Church of Hudson, 226 Eldora Road; visitation 4 to 7 p.m., Monday, October 12, 2009 at Locke Funeral Home and for an hour before services at the church; Burial in Hudson Cemetery; Memorials to the family or Cedar Valley Hospice.
