WATERLOO – Gilbert Ray Bird was born June 26, 1919 in Rural Buchanan County Iowa, son of William and Goldia (Benion) Bird. Gilbert married Marian Williamson on Sept. 29, 1943 and the couple remained in the Jesup area farming for several years. They later moved to Waterloo where he worked as a Lab Control Technician at Rath Packing Plant for 34 years. After retiring from Rath, Gilbert started a lawn care business with his son, Gary, joining him later. He enjoyed doing yardwork for others until he was 86 years of age. He enjoyed playing cards, dancing, and BINGO. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and friends!
Gilbert passed away at the age of 96 years at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo on Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2015, surrounded by his loved ones. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marian, in 1989; son, Gary Bird in 2012; three brothers: Lyle Bird, Ardell Bird and Richard Bird; two sisters: Pauline "Polly" Bird and Marguerite Broessel; and his longtime friend, Alberta Weber in July 2015.
Gilbert is survived by two daughters, Jacque (Gary) Hauser of Toledo, Iowa, and Karen (Al Hintz) Towlerton of Denver, Iowa; eight grandchildren: Randy (Krista) Bird, Erik (Julie) Bird, Angie (Troy Heiple) Buss, Brent (Tracie) Grosse, Kristine (Bud) Field, Kelly (Steven) Langan, Graham (Mandi) Towlerton and Courtney Towlerton; 21 great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.
Visitation will be at Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories, 65 Home Plaza, Waterloo, on Sunday, Nov. 29, 2015 from 4 to 7 p.m. and one hour prior to services at church.
Services will be at St. Timothy United Methodist Church, 3220 Terrace Drive, Cedar Falls on Monday, Nov. 30, 2015 at 11 a.m. with a luncheon following services. Burial will be at Garden of Memories. Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice.
