Ida L. Meythaler, 101, of Independence, died on Sunday, May 23, 2010, at West Village Care Center in Independence following a short illness. She was born on April 13, 1909, in Buchanan County, near Rowley, the daughter of Peter Clausen and Anna Marguerite (Schleeter) Thedens. She graduated from high school in Rowley with the Class of 1926. On June 24, 1930, she and Harold Wilbur Meythaler were married at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. He preceded her in death in 1979. Meythaler was a cook at East Elementary School in Independence for around 10 years. She also worked at Walton's Nursing Home in addition to caring for her family.
Meythaler is survived by one daughter, Janice (Gordon) Esbeck of Tipton; two sons: Don (Vicki) Meythaler of Independence and Robert (Judy) Meythaler of Grinnell; 10 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers and four sisters. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at the First United Methodist Church in Independence. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence.
