James L. Barnes (1933 - 2012)

INDEPENDENCE– James L. Barnes, 79, of Independence died Tuesday morning, Sept. 18, at the ACBM Rehabilitation Center West Campus in Independence.
James was born on Jan. 2, 1933, in Mankato, Minn., the son of Lorn Otto and Dorothy Edith (Janzen) Barnes. He was a graduate of Mobridge High School in Mobridge S.D., and received his Master's in Education from the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, N.D. On Oct. 27 1954 he was united in marriage to LaBeth Arlone Fisher in Mobridge, S.D. In 1964 he became a Guidance Counselor at Davenport Central and West High School, Davenport until they moved to Independence in 1983. He continued working as a counselor at Independence High School until his retirement in 1995.
He is survived by his wife LaBeth Barnes, Independence, three children; Cindy (Greg) Hainline, Winthrop, Terry Barnes-Vice, Aurora, Tammy (Brad) Berendts, Nine Grandchildren, Two Great Grandchildren. A brother Bill Barnes of Spearfish, S.D., and five sisters Betty Larson of Everett Wash., Jean Larson of Puyallup, Wash., Carolyn Palmer of Lake Stevens, Wash., Patty Hurley of Everett, Wash., Lucille Cross of Olympia, Wash..
He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter; Lori Barnes-Gerken, and a brother; Bob Barnes, and two sisters Mary Jane Lyon, and Lorna Jones.
A Military Service will be held at 1 p.m. and a Memorial services with Janice Fricke officiating will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence. Friends may call from 10 a.m. till services Thursday at the funeral home.
