WINTHROP – On Feb. 4, 1933, Jeanne Elizabeth Holt was born at Masonville, the daughter of Michael F. Cooney Jr. and Edna Hockaday Cooney. The family moved to Winthrop, where Jeanne attended and graduated with the Winthrop High School class of 1951.
Jeanne was united in marriage to John L. "Jack" Holt on Feb. 24, 1951, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Winthrop. To this union were born eight children: John, Jerry, Joanie, Joseph, Jeffrey, James, Jay, and Jesse. Her large family was fed with the garden produce that she canned and chickens that she raised. She also enjoyed her lovely flower garden. When her children entered school, she worked at East Buchanan School, Helle's Café, Cooksley's Café, and McElroy's Food Market. Some of her favorite activities were playing cards, and drinking coffee at McElroy's. Children of any age delighted her, but she especially loved and cherished her twenty-three grandchildren. She was a long-time member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Winthrop.
Jack entered into his eternal rest on Sept. 2, 2008.
At 78 years of age, Jeanne entered into her eternal rest on Jan. 13, at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence, following a sudden illness.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Jack; and her sister, Mary Lou Weber.
Survivors include her seven sons and one daughter: John of Minneapolis, MN; Jerry (Debra) of Independence; Joanie (Michael) Walker of Independence; Joseph of Altoona; Jeffrey and James, both of Winthrop; Jay of Bloomfield, Colo.; and Jesse (Stephanie) of Kansas City, Mo.; eleven grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren; her brother, Michael (Sandy) Cooney III of West Des Moines; and other relatives and friends.
