Jerry Lee Postel, 71, of Independence, Iowa, died Thursday morning, July 8, 2010, at his home in Independence following a short illness. Jerry was born on December 29, 1938, in Independence, the son of Max and Ruth (Scott) Postel. He was a 1958 graduate of the Independence High School and was united in marriage to Sandra Kay Hughes on June 16, 1960 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Independence. Jerry served in the U.S. Army from Nov. 7, 1961 through Nov. 1, 1963 following his discharge he returned to Independence where he was employed as an assistant manager with the Jack & Jill Grocery Store, as a custodian with the Independence Community School District, and owned and operated the Maid Rite Restaurant in Independence prior to his retirement. He is survived by three children: Tori (Kevin) Joblinske, Chip and Coy Postel all of Independence, and four grandchildren; Taylor and Connor Joblinske, Jeremey Sherwood, and Clarista Postel, and a sister; Diane Johnson, Independence. He was preceded in death by his parents Max Postel and Ruth (Scott) Bearbower, and his wife Sandra in 2002. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John the Evangelist, Independence. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Independence. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday, and from 8 to 10 a.m. Monday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence.
