Independence - John R. Knight, 61, of rural Independence, died on Thursday, June 4, at his home following a sudden illness. He was born on March 6, 1948, in Independence, the son of George Howard and Verna Mae (Schneeman) Knight. He graduated from high school in Jesup, in 1967. He served with the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. On Oct. 5, 1974, he and the former Jean Zubrod were married in Westgate. They divorced in 1989. Knight worked at the Mental Health Institute in Independence, and also was an independent construction contractor (Knight's Construction in Hazleton). He later was employed at the U.S. Post Office in Waterloo, Iowa. He eventually became the Post Master in Rowley. He retired due to health concerns in December of 1997.
Knight is survived by 2 daughters, Kari (Larry) Budzine of Independence, Iowa, and Dana (Matt) DeTemmerman of Oelwein; one son, Chad Knight of Hazleton, and two grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters: Emily (John) Daws of Dike, and Linda (Rick) Kress of Quasqueton, and one brother, Howdy (Linda) Knight of Independence.
He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 brothers, Ed Knight and Jimmy Knight.
Funeral Services will be held tentatively at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 9, 2009, at the White Funeral Home in Independence, with Pastor Tom Jones officiating. On Monday, June 8, there will be a Military Service beginning at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at a later date in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens in Hazleton.
