INDEPENDENCE – John Richard Crawford was born November 12, 1945 at Waterloo, Iowa, the son of John Wayne and Catherine Hagarty Crawford. The family lived near Waterloo, moved in 1946 to Floyd County and in 1954, moved to the family farm, southwest of Winthrop, Iowa. John became an Eagle Scout in 1960 and later in life served as a District Commissioner for the Boy Scouts from 1982 to 83.
John graduated from East Buchanan High School in Winthrop with the class of 1963. He enlisted in the U.S. Army at the age of 17 and served in Thailand from 1963-64 with the 809th and 561st Army Corps of Engineers in Thailand, building the Freedom Road to Kabinburi. He then served with a construction Battalion in Berlin until his honorable discharge in 1966. John went to the School of Mines in Rapid City, South Dakota from 1966-67.
John was united in marriage to Kathryn Whitesell on August 26, 1967 at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Evansdale, Iowa. To this union were born two daughters: Carmen and Renee. John continued his education at Iowa State University in Ames where he received his degree in Civil Engineering. He became a Land Surveyor in 1975 and joined the society of Land Surveyors in 1976. John founded Crawford Engineering of Independence in 1983 with his brother Dan and continued until his retirement in January, 2015. John returned to build his dream home overlooking the family farm near Winthrop in 2008. He especially enjoyed farming, hunting for Deer and Wild Turkeys in Iowa and South Dakota, Fishing in Canada for over 30 years, spending time with his best friend Don Ryan and his family, especially his grandkids who were the joys of his life.
John Crawford, 70, of rural Independence, entered into his eternal rest at his farm home surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, April 30, 2016.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother Robert; parents-in-law; and a brother-in-law.
Survivors include his wife Kathryn; his two daughters: Carmen (Mike) Whitney of Center Point and Renee (Joel) Nelson of Carroll; his four grandchildren: Macintyre John Whitney, Lauren Catherine Whitney, Emma Renee Nelson, and Cael Crawford Nelson; his ten brothers: Dan (Ruth) , Ron (Dianne) and Larry (Sarah) all of Independence, Iowa; Russell of Exira, Iowa; Pete (Jolene) of Red Oak, Iowa; Kenny (Lila) of Vail, Iowa; Terry (Connie) of Denison, Iowa; Mike (Page) and Steve (Audrey) both of Nevada, Iowa; and Dennis (Renny) of Grinnell, Iowa; five sisters: Mary (Mario) Campean of San Antonio, Texas; Jane (Bill) Falkers of Genoa, Wis.; Rose (Jeff) Grover, and Margaret (Lyle) Hosch, both of Independence; and Patricia (Mike) Buscher of Mundelein, Ill.; his best friend Don Ryan; many nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May, 6, 2016 in St. Patrick's Catholic Church at Winthrop. Interment will be in St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Cemetery at Eagle Center, Iowa. Visitation will be on Thursday, May 5 at the Fawcett Funeral Home in Winthrop from 2:30 until 8 p.m. with a Rosary at 2:30 p.m. and on Friday until 10 a.m. A memorial fund has been established.
