Jon L. Holland (1947 - 2017)

INDEPENDENCE – Jon L. Holland, 69 years old, of Independence, died on Wednesday, Jan. 11, at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence. He was born on March 9, 1947, in State Center, the son of Ronald Verne and Neva Mae (Littlejohn) Holland. He graduated from high school in Independence with the Class of 1965. He attended Waldorf College in Forest City, before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force. He served in the Air Force for 22 years before retiring in 1989.
Jon was an organizer. He produced a city wide free Christmas dinner for several years. He was a founding member of the Independence Celebrations Committee, which presents the Independence Fourth of July celebration and the Brew-B-Q event. He sang in choirs in Independence and Waterloo. He was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Independence and the Independence Rotary Club. And he has been a Councilman at Large on the Independence City Council since 2010.
Mr. Holland is survived by one son, Donald Holland of Swansea, Ill.; two grandchildren; his mother, Neva Holland of Independence; and one sister, Sharon (Bob) Harrison of Madison, Wis.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Memorial Services will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 14, at the First Presbyterian Church in Independence with Rev. John Hougen officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence. On line condolences may be left at
