INDEPENDENCE – Joseph P. McCann, 76, of Independence, IA, died Wednesday, July 20, 2016 at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo.
Joseph was born in Independence, on April 22, 1940 the son of Maurice and Myrtle (Peterson) McCann. He attended school in Winthrop, and received his GED from Hawkeye Technical School in Waterloo.
He entered the U.S. Army on April 3, 1963 and served during the Vietnam War. On September 24, 1965 he married Delores Kress at the Union Church in Quasqueton. He worked for many years as a truck driver for Aurora Elevator Company and retired from Bruening Rock Products. For a short time he ran a small engine repair shop out of his home called the McCannic's Shop. He enjoyed camping, NASCAR and tinkering in his garage; but he enjoyed spending time with his family the most.
He is survived by his wife, Delores McCann, Independence; two sons: Dan (Susan) McCann, Fairbank, and Darrin (Angie) McCann Oelwein; eight grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; and a sister, Sandra Dahms of Anamosa.
Joseph was preceded in death by his parents; a sister Charlotte Kirby; and a brother Eugene McCann.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday July 23, 2016, at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence, with Pastor Dan Paxton presiding. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence, and from 8 a.m. till services Saturday at the Funeral Home.
