INDEPENDENCE - Joyce A. Michels, 76, of Independence, died Wednesday, Nov. 9, at the Grandview Care Center, Oelwein.
Joyce was born on Oct. 7, 1935, near Lamont, the daughter of Bill and Edna (Crow) Martin. She was a graduate of the Lamont High School, and was married to Norman J. Michels on June 21, 1956 in St. John's Catholic Church, Independence. She received a nursing assistant certificate from Hawkeye Tech in Waterloo, and was employed with Peoples Memorial Hospital (Buchanan County Health Center) in Independence for 34 years prior to her retirement in 2006.
She was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, St. John's Rosary Society, and the Buchanan County Health Center's Hospital Auxiliary.
Surviving are five children; Bruce Michels, Rowley, Douglas (Martha) Michels, Independence, Kathryn Simmons, Thornton, Colo., Richard (Nancy) Michels, Bend, Ore., and Carol (Steve) Saddoris, Alburnett, sixteen grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, and two sisters; Gladys Richardson, Aurora, and Darlene (Mike) Shelton, Underwood.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband; Norman J. Michels in 2004, a sister; June Bandixen, and a brother; Eldon Martin.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 14 at St. John's Catholic Church, Independence, with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Reiff Funeral Home and Crematory, Independence where a rosary will be recited at 3 p.m. and a parish vigil service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Sunday.
