Independence - Kathryn M. Graham, 95 years old, of Waterloo, Iowa, formerly of Independence, Iowa, died on Tuesday, August 4, 2009, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, Iowa, following a sudden illness. She was born on December 26, 1913, in Middlefield Township of Buchanan County, Iowa, the daughter of James Matthew and Mary Agnes (Lahey) McGraw. She graduated from high school in Lamont, Iowa, in 1931. She continued her education at Mt. Mercy Jr. College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and graduated in 1933. She completed her B.A. degree from Upper Iowa University in Fayette, Iowa, in 1964. On April 15, 1944, she and Merle Richard Graham were married at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Masonville, Iowa. He preceded her in death on September 16, 1997. Mrs. Graham was a teacher in the elementary schools of Buchanan County and Independence for 39 years. Mrs. Graham was a member of St. Edward's Catholic Church in Waterloo, Iowa, and was formerly a member of Catholic Daughters of America in Independence.

Mrs. Graham is survived by 1 son, Nick Graham of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, 1 daughter, Michaele (Bob) Duggan of Gig Harbor, Washington, 2 grandchildren, and 2 sisters, Bette Murdo of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Ann Merideth of Denver, Colorado.

In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, 1 brother, Louis McGraw, and 5 sisters, Lucille Fox, Marguerite Mersch, Dorothy Decker, Donna Sheeley, and Tish Dolphin.

There are no public services scheduled. Burial will be at St. John's Cemetery in Independence, Iowa, at a later date. On line condolences may be left at www.white-mthope.com. White Funeral Home of Independence is in charge of arrangements.
