WINTHROP – Kathryn Jean Freeman Fawcett was born March 27, 1928, on a farm southeast of Winthrop, the daughter of Kenneth Gifford and Marion Taylor Freeman. She attended country school and Winthrop High School, graduating with the class of 1946. After high school, she attended Iowa State University in Ames for one year.
Kathryn was united in marriage to Lester "Bud" Charles Fawcett on Oct. 12, 1947, at the Congregational Church in Winthrop. To this union were born two sons: Gregory and Douglas. They lived in Winthrop their entire married life. Known as a dedicated businesswoman, she worked at the Freeman Sundry Store, Fawcett Produce, and later Fawcett Funeral Homes and Furniture Store. Bud entered into his eternal rest on March 3, 1999. Kathryn continued to live above the funeral home until the spring of 2011, when she moved to Prairie Hills Assisted Living in Independence.
A very active member of the Winthrop community, Kathryn was a member of Church of Christ United, the Ladies' Fellowship, Order of the Eastern Star, American Legion Auxiliary, Winthrop C & C Club, Buffalo Creek Golf Course and Country Club, and Bridge Marathon. She loved to read, watch birds, and play cards. Her family, especially her cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren, were the highlights of her life.
Just short of her 85th birthday, Kathryn entered into her eternal rest on Sunday, March 3, 2013 at her beloved apartment at Prairie Hills Assisted Living Center in Independence. She really appreciated her family, the residents and wonderful caring staff at Prairie Hills, and the kind Cedar Valley Hospice personnel who made it possible to stay in her apartment.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband of 51 years, Lester, her younger son Douglas, in 1969; her great-grandson Jacob Lipski; and her two brothers, George and Earl.
Surviving family includes: son and daughter-in-law Greg and Connie Fawcett of Winthrop; three granddaughters: Lori (Jason) Ciha of Gilbert, Ariz.; Patricia (Tony) Lipski of Washington; and Janet (Mark) Kress of Winthrop; grandson, Johnathan Fawcett of Winthrop; nine great-grandchildren: Trevor, Allyson, and Madelyn Ciha; Joseph, Aidan, and Hannah Lipski; Dylan, Kayla, and Emma Kress; brother, Richard (Ellen) Freeman of Fairfax; sisters-in-law, Lucille Freeman of Sumner, and Twila Freeman of Dumont; many special nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
Celebration of Life services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 9, 2013 at the Church of Christ United in Winthrop with Pastor Dean Schlitter officiating. Casketbearers will be Johnathan Fawcett, Jason Ciha, Trevor Ciha, Tony Lipski, Joseph Lipski, Mark Kress, and Dylan Kress. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery at Winthrop.
A memorial fund has been established.
