INDEPENDENCE– Kathryn Lee Howlett, 96, of Independence died Friday evening, Dec. 13, at the Buchanan County Health Center's Long Term Care Center in Independence.
Kathryn was born on Feb. 7, 1917, in Clayton, Ohio the daughter of Herman W. and Estella A. (Wenger) Betz. She received her education from the Clayton Schools, and her teaching certificate from the Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Ind. On July 27, 1940 she was united into marriage to Rev. Robert A. Howlett in Englewood, Ohio. The family lived in Floyd, Zumbrota, Minn., Rochester, Minn., Waterloo, Des Moines, Walker, and St. Paul, Minn., while her husband ministered in those communities prior to his retirement at which time they moved to Independence.
Kathryn was a member of the Hope Wesleyan Church, Independence. She loved her family, and enjoyed cooking, music, entertaining, crafting, and working with the children of the church.
She is survived by two sons; Robert D. (Marla) Howlett, Independence, and Donald (Dana) Howlett, Marion, Ind., and four grandchildren; Matthew, Daniel, Bethany and Stephen Howlett, a great grandson; Zachary Howlett, and a sister; Lillian Unger, Englewood, Ohio.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hope Wesleyan Church, Independence with Rev. Robert Solon officiating. Burial was be in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Independence. Friends called for visitation from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence and from 9 a.m. till Services Tuesday at the Church.
