Independence - Kenneth W. Coulter, 75 years old, of Independence, Iowa, died on Monday, January 25, 2010, at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence following a sudden illness. He was born on April 6, 1934, in Buchanan County, near Independence, Iowa, the son of Earl Leander and Wanda Lillian (Wright) Coulter. He graduated from high school in Independence with the Class of 1952 and then continued his education at Gates Business College in Waterloo, Iowa. Mr. Coulter served in the U.S. Marines during the Korean Conflict. On June 24, 1956, he and the former Beverly Jean Belzer were married at the First Methodist Church in Independence, Iowa. Mr. Coulter was an insurance agent and realtor with several companies before retiring officially in 1991. However, he was the type of person that always had a job of some sort. He started as a pin setter at an Independence bowling alley when he was in the Second Grade of school, and even after retiring, he still had a part time job at KwikStar in Independence. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church and he was the Chaplain for the Bechter-Boies V.F.W. Post # 2440. He was also the Chairman of the Buchanan County Veterans Commission.
Mr. Coulter is survived by his wife of 53 years, Beverly, 1 son, David (Jeannie) Coulter of Clear Lake, Iowa, and 1 daughter, Karen (Michael) Young of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, 6 grandchildren, Matthew Coulter of Clear Lake, Iowa, Crystal (Tony) Backer of Mason City, Iowa, Katie Coulter of Dallas, Texas, Kerc Coulter of Monroe, Iowa, and Adam Young and Brandon Young, both of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and 1 great grandson, Anthony Backer. He is also survived by 1 daughter-in-law, Deborah Coulter of Monroe, Iowa, 1 brother, Bill (Madonna) Coulter of Independence, Iowa, and 3 sisters, Betty Conrad of Mt. Vernon, Iowa, Wanda Lehrkemp of Carroll, Iowa, and Earlene (Gene) Devlin of Dundee, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 son, Kenneth C. Coulter, 1 brother, Robert Coulter, 3 sisters, Therma Andrews, Mary Horn, and Marthalene Tull, 1 sister-in-law, Bonnie Greene, and 1 brother-in-law, Jeff Drake.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 29, 2010, at the First United Methodist Church in Independence, Iowa, with Rev. Dennis Bailey officiating. On Thursday, January 28th, there will be a Military Service beginning at 7 p.m. at the White Funeral Home. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence.
White Funeral Home of Independence is in charge of arrangements. Friends may call for visitation from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 28th, at the funeral home.
