INDEPENDENCE– Kenneth M. Nollen, 85, of Independence, died Sunday morning, March 31, at the Buchanan County Health Care Center in Independence.
Ken was born on Dec. 23, 1927, on a farm northwest of Defiance, the son of Michael and Frances (Thielen) Nollen. He attended the Union Township No. 5 Country School near Defiance, and graduated from St. Paul's High School in May 1946. On Jan. 19, 1948 he married Helen Baker at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Harlan. He drove truck for Bud Freund at Defiance Sqwaker Feed & Grain in Harlan. Managed the Shelby County Home & Farm, Cox Grain & Feed in Tennant, before moving to Independence in 1966 where he managed the Greenley Elevator for many years, and later farmed. He also worked part-time as a Farm Service Field Agent.
He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, the St. Pius 10th Knights of Columbus, The Farm Bureau, served as a Washington Township Trustee, and served on the Hawkeye Council on Ageing.
He is survived by his wife Helen, Independence; three children: William Nollen, Clutier, Frances (Brian) Swarts, Independence, and Terry Nollen, Belle Plain; nine grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; a sister; Marilyn Goeser, Harlan; and two brothers: Harold Nollen, Mobile, Ala. and Ron Nollen, Westphalia.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Michael in 2006; two sisters: Betty Bruck, and Lila Kirshbaum; and a brother, John Nollen.
A Mass of Resurrection will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 4, at St. John's Catholic Church in Independence with Rev. Don Plamondon officiating. Burial will be in the St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Independence. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 8 to 10 a.m. Thursday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence, where a rosary will be recited at 4 p.m. and a parish Wake Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
