NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Laura Evelyn Ritland Tverberg, 95, passed away on Saturday, June 10 at the Northfield Hospital Long Term Care Center, with her family by her side.
Laura was born on Feb. 17, 1922, in rural Elroy, Wis., the daughter of Oscar and Gertrude (Nelson) Ritland. She attended the Knickerbocker School, a one-room schoolhouse near the family farm, and graduated at age 15 from Elroy High School. In 1941 she graduated cum laude from St. Olaf College with a degree in biology, and was then employed by the biology department at the college to teach zoology and botany. During her time at St. Olaf she met Miltzo Tverberg, the brother of her college roommate. Miltzo and Laura were married on August 23, 1944, at Plymouth Lutheran Church in rural Mauston, Wis.
While Miltzo was in medical school at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Laura completed a Master of Science in Clinical Technology from Wayne State University in Detroit. She was then employed in the hematology laboratory at the Cleveland Clinic where she worked until the birth of their first child. The couple eventually moved to Mauston, Wis. where Miltzo was a family practice physician, then later to Independence, Iowa, where Miltzo completed a residency in psychiatry and finished his medical career as a psychiatrist at the Mental Health Institute. The couple raised seven children during this time. In 2001 they returned to Northfield, to be nearer to family. They were married a total of 63 years before Miltzo's death in 2008.
Laura was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Northfield, and a former member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Independence, and Bethany Lutheran Church in Mauston. She enjoyed homemaking, studying the Bible, and volunteering with Christian Women's Club. Her faith in Jesus Christ was an important part of her life. Laura will be remembered for her skill at keeping a cozy home, organizing and caring for her extended family, and helping her husband meet the demands of a busy medical career. She retained her interest in, and knowledge of, God's world and His creation and could identify plant and insect species well into her later years. Laura was humble, loving, and intelligent, and was a blessing to her family, friends, and neighbors.
Survivors include her children: Gail (Ben) Setzer of Atlanta, Pauline (Dennis) Shoemaker of Milwaukee, Elaine (Dietrich) Fabricius of Hendersonville, N.C., Diane (Michael) Bina of Bloomington, Minn., Maureen (Niki Athis) Tverberg of Seattle, David (Lora) Tverberg of Owatonna, Minn., and Lois Tverberg of Holland, Mich.; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brother Donald Ritland of Verona, Wis. and sister Norma Ness of Duluth, Minn.; sister-in-law Dagny Tverberg Lerseth of Beresford, S.D.; and many nieces and nephews.
