JESUP – Laurence J. Amfahr, 82, of Jesup, died Saturday, March 13, 2010, at his home following a lengthy cancer illness. He was born Jan. 5, 1928, in Westburg Township of Buchanan County, the son of Lawrence Amfahr and Caecilia (Frost) Amfahr. He graduated from Jesup High School with the class of 1947. He served in the US Army from 1951-1953. On Feb. 4, 1957, he was united in marriage to Joyce Marie Kane at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Waterloo. They made their home at Jesup where Laurence farmed. He became Post Master in Jesup in 1967 and served in that capacity until retirement in 1992.
Laurence is survived by his wife, Joyce of Jesup; one daughter, Tina (James "Bud") Geweke of Jesup, and two grandchildren: Rylan Timmons and Mackenzie Geweke both of Jesup. He is preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Paul in infancy, his twin brother, Clarence in 1953, also Walter, Burton, and Peter Amfahr; and two sisters, Rose Bonefas and Mildred Patin.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. - Tuesday, March 16, 2010, at St. Athanasius Catholic Church, Jesup. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Monday, March 15, 2010, at the White Funeral Home, Jesup, IA, where there will be a 3:00 p.m. Knights of Columbus Rosary and a 7:00 p.m. Vigil Service on Monday. Visitation will continue for an hour before services Tuesday at the church. Burial will be at St. Athanasius Catholic Cemetery, Jesup, IA, with Military Rites conducted by Pump-Scheer American Legion Post 342 of Jesup.
