HAZLETON– Lawrence H. Wessels, 75, of Hazleton, died Wednesday May 16, at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence.
Lawrence was born on April 27, 1937 in Independence the son of Adolph F. and Johanna M. (Rothfuss) Wessels. He was a 1955 graduate of the Independence High School, and then attended Wartburg College, Waverly. On Oct. 9, 1960 he married LaVelle J. Hertzberg in Independence. The couple farmed near Hazleton and Lawrence was involved in Tiling, Electrical and Plumbing and worked for the John Deere Company in Waterloo for a short period.
He was an active member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church serving on many church councils and committees.
He is survived by his wife LaVelle Wessels, Hazleton, three children; Tim (Stephanie) Wessels, Big Bend, Wisc., Brenda (Dave) Robu, Helenville, Wisc., and Malinda (Rory) Higgins, Swisher; one grandson; a brother, Rev. Bob Wessels, Lisbon; and a sister; Linda (Roger) Cole, Alexandria, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Larry Wessels in 1988, and a brother Harry John Wessels.
A Military Memorial Service was held at 7 p.m. Friday in the funeral home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 19, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Independence, with Rev. Kurt Bockoven officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Hope Cemetery, Independence. Friends called from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence and from 9 a.m. till Services Saturday at the church.
