Independence - Lelia M. Joens, 93, of Independence, died Monday, Dec. 28, 2009, at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence following a short illness. She was born on December 10, 1916, in Mt. Auburn, the daughter of Louis and Martha (Pauls) Goudy. She graduated from high school in Mt. Auburn. On July 2, 1936, she and George Johannes Joens, Sr., were married at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They farmed in Benton County and Buchanan County until they retired in 1975.
Joens is survived by her husband of 72 years, George, Sr.; her son, George (Dixie Lee) Joens of Brandon; her daughter, Bonnie (Thomas) Haes of Vinton; 13 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Patricia Bumgarner; two brothers and two sisters.
There will be no services at this time. Her body was cremated. Graveside Services at the LaPorte City Cemetery in LaPorte City are planned at a later date.
