Lois G. Combs, 99 years old, of Independence, Iowa, died on Wednesday, December 30, 2009, at the Buchanan County Health Center Long Term Care in Independence following a sudden illness. She was born on September 12, 1910, in Buchanan County, near Rowley, Iowa, the daughter of Jefferson Davis and Lillian (Ferry) Combs. She graduated from high school in Rowley, Iowa, with the class of 1927. Then, she completed the course of study for teacher certification at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She taught in the Buchanan County country schools for several years. From 1951 until her retirement in 1985, she was a clerk at a succession of Independence retail stores. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Independence.
Combs is survived by 2 nieces, Pat Stegall of Galesburg, Illinois, and Lillian (Monte) Cue of Independence, Iowa, 2 nephews, Glenn (Betty) Nellist of Center Point, Iowa, and Leland (June) Nellist of Gwinn, Michigan, and 28 great and great great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, 2 brothers, Charles Combs and Newell Combs, 3 sisters, Ruth Combs, Wilma Rorick, and Helen Nellist, and 1 niece, Mary Lou Robbins.
Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, January 4, 2010, at the White Funeral Home in Independence, Iowa, with Rev. John Hougen officiating. Music will be provided by Mrs. Monte Cue, organist, and Mr. Monte Cue, vocal soloist. Burial will be in Rowley Cemetery in Rowley, Iowa.
