Malvin "Bud" Machacek, 92, of rural Winthrop, died Monday at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence, following a short illness. He was born on May 24, 1918, in Linn County, the son of Vaclav "Wesley" and Pauline (Novak) Machacek. He graduated from high school in Alburnett in 1938. On August 21, 1940, he and the former Bonnie Beryl Reed were married in Waterloo. They farmed in Buchanan County. Machacek retired in 2005. Bonnie preceded him in death in 2009. Machacek is survived by two sons: David (Marcy) Machacek of Alburnett, and Richard (Cheryl) Machacek of Winthrop; four grandchildren: Kristin (Ryan) Baker of St. Augustine, Fla., Stephanie (Bobby) Ascher of Marion, Jennifer Machacek of Ft. Worth, Texas, and Andrew Machacek of Independence and three great-grandchildren: Brennan Baker, Connor Baker, and Dylan Ascher.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and nine brothers and sisters. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday at the White Funeral Home in Independence. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence. White Funeral Home of Independence is in charge of arrangements. Friends may call for visitation after 10 a.m. on Saturday the funeral home.
