INDEPENDENCE – Mark Anthony Hogan, II was born December 2, 1929, the son of Mark Hogan Sr. and Florence Gallery Hogan. He grew up in Winthrop and graduated from Winthrop Consolidated High School.
Mark was united in marriage to Nadine L. Kearns on April 7, 1952 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Waterloo. They moved various times while Mark was in the service and upon his discharge in 1953 they moved to Evansdale. Moving to their farm east of Winthrop in 1963, they raised their nine children: Joan, Carol, Mark, Dean, Robin, Christine, Pat, Michelle, and Melissa. In 2007 they moved to their home at Cardinal Court in Independence.
Mark worked at Rath Packing in Waterloo for nearly 30 years. He also farmed full time. He was an avid card player and always enjoyed socializing with his family and friends.
Nadine entered into her eternal rest on Dec. 8, 2010. Mark continued living at Cardinal Court with a lot of help from his children.
Mark entered into eternal rest on Friday, Dec. 13 at his home in Independence.
Survivors include: his nine children: Joan (Dennis) Sommerfelt of Walker; Carol (Mike) Williams of Merrill; Mark (Jackie) Hogan of Independence; Dean (Sue) Hogan of Independence; Robin Kress of Quasqueton; Christine (Stewart) Bagley of Independence; Pat Hogan of Mediapolis; Michelle O'Brien of Belle Plaine; and Melissa (Kevin) Bergom of Belle Plaine; twenty two grandchildren; thirty great grandchildren; one brother John C. (Margaret) Hogan of Winthrop; and one sister in law Lucille Hogan of Winthrop.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Nadine; two son-in-laws: Ronnie Kress and Donald O'Brien; three brothers: Cyril, Eugene, and Francis Hogan; and three sisters: LaVaughn Deegan, Mary Lindsay, and Coletta Boeding.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Winthrop with Father Donald J. Plamondon officiating. Music provided by Ann Slattery and St. Patrick's Choir. Interment was in St. Patrick's Cemetery at Winthrop with military rites.
Friends called for visitation from 3 until 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 16 and until 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17 at Fawcett Funeral Home in Winthrop. A scripture service will be held at 7:30 PM on Monday at Fawcett Funeral Home.
