Marlys K. Brownlee, 69 years old, of Independence, died Tuesday, Oct. 13, at West Village Care Center in Independence, following a short illness. She was born on May 9, 1940, in Frazee, Minnesota, the daughter of Theodore and Doris Mae (Long) Flaten.
She graduated from high school in Independence in 1958 and from Upper Iowa University in Fayette, Iowa, in 1962. Mrs. Brownlee was an editor for several government agencies. She finished graduate degrees while she was working at Vint Hill Army Base in Gainesville, Va. She also was a private voice and piano teacher. She retired in 1998. Mrs. Brownlee was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Independence, the Friends of the Independence Public Library, and the Buchanan County Historical Society. She was a frequent volunteer at the Buchanan County Senior Center and enjoyed playing cards.
Brownlee is survived by one son, Jeffrey Hayes of Santa Fe, N.M.; one daughter, Jennifer (Shannon Flood) Hayes of Catonsville, Md., and one sister, Marcia Poston of Independence.
She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant daughter, Laurene.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, October 16, 2009, at the First United Methodist Church in Independence with Rev. Dennis Bailey officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence. Friends may call for visitation from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, at the funeral home.
