Independence - Marva A. Schmitt,. 81, of Independence, died Sunday, March 21, 2010, at the Buchanan County Health Center LTC in Independence following a sudden illness. She was born Dec. 22, 1928, in Buchanan County, the daughter of Merritt James and Verna Mable (Blank) McCardle. She graduated from St. John's Catholic School in Independence, with the Class of 1946. On May 22, 1946, she and Donald Earl Schmitt were married at St. John's Catholic Church in Independence. He preceded her in death in 2007. Before retiring, Mrs. Schmitt was a nurses aide at Peoples Memorial Hospital LTC in Independence. She was a member of St. John's Catholic Church and the Marvelous Marvas.
Mrs. Schmitt is survived by five daughters: Becky (Jary) Shedenhelm of LeRoy, Minn.; Nancy (William) Austin of Waterloo; Susan Miller and Lisa (Richard) Moore, both of Independence, and Jody (Kevin) Nie of Cedar Rapids; four sons: Tony (Mary) Schmitt and Dana Schmitt, both of Independence; Jeff Schmitt of Grandview, Texas, and Lew Schmitt of Springville, and one daughter-in-law, Sherri Schmitt of Jesup. She is also survived by 21 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; her step mother, Mary McCardle of Independence; two brothers: John (Beverly) McCardle of Brandon, and Merritt McCardle, Jr. of Independence, and two sisters: Rose Mary (Joe) Sironen of Madison, Ohio, and Elaine (Fred) Lee of Calhan, Colo. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Steven A. Schmitt; one grandson, Robbie Gerbracht; three brothers: Robert McCardle, Roger McCardle, and Ken McCardle, and 1 sister, Jeanne Parish. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Independence. On Wednesday, there will be a Parish Rosary at 3 p.m. and a Vigil Service at 7 p.m. at the White Funeral Home in Independence. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery in Independence. White Funeral Home of Independence is in charge of arrangements. Friends may call for visitation from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Mar. 24th, at the funeral home.
