Independence - Mary Ellen Shaw, 72, of Independence, died on Wednesday, June 16, 2010, following a long illness. She was born Dec. 15, 1937, in Howard County, north of Blairsburg, the daughter of Marion Gilbert "Pete" and May (Carrow) Nail. She graduated from high school in Webster City with the Class of 1956. She then earned her Registered Nursing degree from Iowa Methodist School of Nursing in Des Moines. On Nov. 15, 1959, she and Frank Shaw, Jr., were married in Webster City. They moved to Independence and became the new owners of Shaw Plumbing and Heating. They retired in 1999. Shaw is survived by her husband, Frank Shaw, Jr.; two daughters: Penny (Rory) Payne of Alta and Cindy (Kevin) Freeman of Orange Beach, Ala.; two sons: Frank M. Shaw of Las Vegas, Nev., and Dave (Devin) Shaw of Independence and eight grandchildren: Ashlea, Brad, Haley, Faith, Delaney, Carley, Presley and Dawson. She is also survived by one sister, Olive Mae (Darrel) Weber of Ames. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers: Charlie and Bill and one sister, Nellie. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 19, 2010, at the First Baptist Church in Independence. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence. White Funeral Home of Independence is in charge of arrangements. A Memorial Fund has been established for Cedar Valley Hospice, 801 1st Str. E., Independence, Iowa 50644.
