JESUP – Mary Imojean Schutte, 88, formerly of rural Jesup, died Monday, June 24, at the Western Home's Martin Health Center in Cedar Falls. She was born Nov. 29, 1924, in Lamont, the daughter of Jason Clarence Whitney and Lora (Reed) Whitney. She attended school there and graduated from Lamont High School with the class of 1942. She advanced her education at Upper Iowa University in Fayette, where she received her teaching certificate and then taught school in the rural schools near Lamont and Aurora. On Sept. 9, 1947, she was united in marriage to Gail Alvin Schutte in Lamont. They spent their married years farming south of Jesup at Shady Grove. Her husband Gail preceded her in death on Feb. 11, 2009.
Mrs. Schutte is survived by three daughters, Vicki (Joel) Decker of Prior Lake, Minn., Debra Tokheim of River Falls, Wis., Nancy (Steve) Ober of Urbandale; two sons, Craig Schutte of Jesup, and Kent (Lynn) Schutte of Cambridge, Minn., 16 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren. In addition to her husband Gail, she is preceded in death by one sister, Doris Knickerbocker; one brother, Donald Whitney; a daughter in law, Kathy J. Schutte and a son in law, Bruce Tokheim.
Funeral services were Friday, June 28, at the First United Methodist Church, Jesup, with Rev. Lynn C. Gardner officiating. Dawn Quackenbush was the organist. Burial was at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Independence. Visitation was Thursday, June 27. Memorials will be directed to charity. Online condolences may be left at www.white-mthope.com.
