Independence - Mary A. McCardle, 98, of Independence, Iowa, died on Saturday, July 31, 2010, at West Village Care Center in Independence following a short illness. She was born on Nov. 29, 1911, in Petersburg, the daughter of Joseph A. and Agnes Ann (Wiegand) Overmann. On March 30, 1937, she and Merritt James McCardle, Sr., were married in Chicago. He preceded her in death in 1974. She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Independence, the St. John's Rosary Society, and Court Ascension #495 C.D.A. Mary was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. At the age of 26 she took on a ready made family of 7 and had 2 daughters of her own. One year to care for that family, she canned over 500 quarts of vegetables and fruit. She is an inspiration to us all. Mary was hard working with a sense of humor and love of a good joke.
Mary is survived by two daughters: Rose Mary (Joseph) Sironen of Madison, Ohio, and Elaine M. (Frederick) Lee of Calhan, Colorado, and one step son, Merritt McCardle, Jr., of Independence. She is also survived by 39 grandchildren, 80 great grandchildren, and many great great grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; four step sons: Ken McCardle, Roger McCardle, Robert McCardle, and John McCardle; two step-daughters: Jeanne Parish and Marva Schmitt; two sisters and four brothers.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Independence with the Rev. Donald Plamondon as the Celebrant. Gwen Hennessey, Mary Beth Mikita, and Heather Lee Parmley were lectors. Casket Bearers were William McCardle, Charles McCardle, Tony Schmitt, Larry McCardle, Patrick Hennessey, and Wayne Naylor. Burial was in St. John's Cemetery in Independence.
