Melvin John Funk (1924 - 2012)


WINTHROP – Melvin Funk, 87, of rural Winthrop, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 12, at the Buchanan County Health Center, Long-Term Care, in Independence, of cancer.
Melvin Funk, son of Clarence and Fern (Mueller) Funk, was born on the family farm on August 22, 1924 in Bennington Township near Waterloo.
He married JoAnn Rose Sept. 18, 1949 at the Methodist church in Morrison, Ill. Shortly after, they moved to Waterloo to run the family dairy farm.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, JoAnn; six children, Daryl (Carol), Coralville, Dallis (Rena), Milford, Ill, Dennis (Tom Sanew), Sun Prairie, Wisc., Deanna (Keith) Weber, Cedar Falls, Duan (Jennifer), Winthrop, and Devan (Susan), DeForest, Wisc.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15, at the Church of Christ United with Pastor Dean Schlitter officiating.
Inurnment will take place later. Visitation was 4 until 7 p.m. Tuesday at Fawcett Funeral Home and after 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church.
Memorials may be given to the Church of Christ United building fund, Winthrop, or the Cedar Valley Hospice, Independence.
