WINTHROP– Melvin L. Kaufman 79, of Winthrop, died Thursday, June 27, at Buchanan County Health Center Long Term Care Center, Independence.
Melvin was born on April 27, 1934, in Chelsea the son of Leo A. and Bessie J. (Iezek) Kaufman. He attended the Tama/Toledo, Iowa Schools and entered the U.S. Navy on July 2, 1953 serving with the Seabees in the Philippines Islands until his discharge on July 1, 1957.
On October 8, 1956 he was married to Julia May Sylvia in Tama. Following his discharge, the family made their home in Kingsville, Texas, where Melvin was employed as a U.S. Postal Carrier for 31 years prior to his retirement. He moved to the Winthrop, Iowa area in 1994.
He is survived by two sons, Kevin (Sonia) Kaufman, Katy, Texas, and Randy Kaufman, Independence; and three brothers; LeRoy Kaufman, Farmington, N.M., Gary (Linda) Kaufman and Larry (Velma) Kaufman of Toddville.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Julia in 2005; his sister and brother-in-law Mariann and Don Hepker.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, July 1, at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence, with Sharon Bainbridge officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Independence. Friends may call from 11 a.m. till services Monday at the funeral home.
