Michael G. Steine (1946 - 2011)

INDEPENDENCE – Michael G. Steine, 65, of Independence, died Thursday evening, Nov. 17, at the Buchanan County Health Center. Mike was born on Aug 3, 1946, in Decorah, the son of James and Loraine (Williams) Steine. He graduated from the Decorah High School in 1964 and entered the U.S. Navy serving aboard the USS Vogelgesang during the Vietnam War until his discharge in 1968.
Mike was married to Diane Boyd and the couple later divorced. On Feb. 13, 1971, he was united in marriage to Kathleen K. McLeland. The couple resided in Independence, where Mike was employed with the Independence Light and Power Company until he retired for health reasons. Mike also was a sign painter and artist in the Independence area for many years.
He is survived by his wife Kathy; four children; Brad Steine, Lowell, Ark., Genevieve (Tim) Manatt, Gilbertville, Tina Kite, Independence, and Michael Steine, Carbondale, Ill., four grandchildren; Tim (Sushmita) Manatt, Falls Church, Va., Sarah Manatt, Mesa, Ariz., Brittney and Blake Higgins, Independence, a brother; Clair (Sylvia) Steine, Decorah, an aunt; Sue Steine, Winona, Minn., and his best friend; Larry Wright, Independence.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov. 22, at the Reiff Funeral Home and Crematory, Independence. Visitation was held Monday and again Tuesday before services at the Funeral Home. A Military Memorial Service was held at 7 p.m. Monday. Burial was in the Wilson Cemetery, Independence.
