BEATRICE, Neb. – Michael J. Mulvaney, 64, of Beatrice, Neb., died at the Lake Regional Hospital in Osage Beach, Mo. on Saturday, July 7 after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born on April 2, 1948 at Omaha, Neb. He attended and graduated from Independence High School in Independence in 1966. He then attended Peru State Teachers College where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education. While in college, he played football and threw the shot put and discus for the track team. He was inducted into the Independence High School Hall of Fame in 1994 and the Peru State Hall of Fame on Sept. 30, 1995 for his achievements in football, shot put and discus. He was married to Carol Shanklin on Dec. 21, 1968 at the First Presbyterian Church in Independence. He worked at the Beatrice State Developmental Center since 1971 and had served as the activities director, hospital administrator and the administrative support services director, retiring in 2008. On May 15, 1993, he was married to Pat Jonas Thavenet in Beatrice. He was a member of Aerie 531 of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Beatrice Country Club where he had served as chairman of the Shotgun Blast and won the tournament three times, most recently in 2012. He enjoyed being with his grandchildren, renovating houses, playing golf, hunting, fishing and wintering in McAllen, Texas. He is a former member of the First Presbyterian Church of Beatrice.
Survivors include his wife, Pat Mulvaney of Beatrice, Neb.; one son, Sean Mulvaney and wife Susan of Lincoln, Neb.; two daughters, Cori Zimmerman and husband Rod of Beatrice and Keri Mulvaney and special friend Jeff Hagemeier of Beatrice, Neb.; two step-sons, Jim Thavenet and wife Jamie and Jason Thavenet and wife Kirsten all of Beatrice, Neb.; 12 grandchildren, Hillary Faulder, Natalie VanWinkle, Jared VanWinkle, Alexis Thavenet, Emily Thavenet, Cassidy Thavenet, Ian Mulvaney, Carter Mulvaney, Mercedes Zimmerman, Hunter Thavenet, Austin Thavenet and Tatum Thavenet. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rex and Phyllis Rogers Mulvaney.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, July 13 at Christ Community Church of Beatrice, Neb., with Pastor Jack Magness officiating. Cremation will follow the service and inurnment of the cremains will be at a later date. A family prayer service will be held at 12:45 p.m. at the church on Friday. In lieu of flowers at Michael's request, a memorial has been established to Peru State Football Program and Beatrice High School Football Program with Stan Wirth and Rick Mayfield in charge. The body will lie in state at the Fox Funeral Home of Beatrice, Neb., from 3 p.m. on Tuesday until 9 p.m. Thursday and at the church one hour preceding the services on Friday. The family will meet and greet family and friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. A guestbook for signatures and messages of condolence is available online at [email protected].
