OELWEIN – Nellie E. Finder, 88, of Oelwein and formerly of Hazleton died on Monday, April 9 at Mercy Living Plus in Oelwein. Funeral Services will be at 10:30 a.m.. on Thursday, April 12 at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Oelwein. Officiating will be Rev. Jerry Chase. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home and after 9:30 a.m. on Thursday. Interment will be at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens Cemetery in rural Oelwein. Memorials may be given in her name to Trinity United Methodist Church of Hazleton, Iowa or Mercy Living Plus in Oelwein.

Nellie E. Bates was born on June 9, 1923 at Westgate, the daughter of John L. and Virgie A. (Summers) Bates. She was raised in Fairbank, attended school there and moved to Chicago, Ill. for five years. Nellie then moved to Hazleton and worked as a clerk at Woolworth's Department Store in Oelwein for 11 years and was also a waitress at Joan and Al's in Oelwein. She married Frank M. Kuchan on Feb. 2, 1947 at Chicago, Ill. Frank died on Sept. 5, 1963. Nellie married Richard Everett Finder on Sept. 4, 1964 at Hazleton. Richard died on August 23, 1994 and she then moved to Oelwein in 1995. Nellie was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church at Hazleton, United Methodist Women, a member of the Emma Arnold Society, and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Oelwein Chapter 45. She has been a resident of Mercy Living Plus in Oelwein since July 2011. Nellie enjoyed reading, tying rugs, her quilting group, playing cards, and talking to family and friends.
Nellie is survived by: a daughter: Karen (Mike) Westhoff of Las Vegas, Nev.; A step-son: Robert Finder of Queen Creek, Ariz.; Five step-grandsons: Jeff, David, Robert, Richard, and Paul Finder ;Many step-great grandsons and Step- Great Granddaughters; Three Brothers: Clifford Bates of Hobart, Ind. Gerald "Bennie" (Joan) Bates of Oelwein and Verble Bates of Fairbank; One sister:Ina Ferrel of Grantsburg, Ill.; A brother-in-law: Delbert (friend-Sue) Finder of Readlyn; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her Parents-Husbands (Frank M. Kuchan and Richard E. Finder); two sisters: Thelma Mead and Nyda Rubino; three brothers: Edwin Bates, Harold Bates and Kenneth Bates; a step-granddaughter: Rachel Finder; and a step-daughter-in-law Sandra Finder
