INDEPENDENCE – Norman Lee Buchheit, 46 year old of Independence and formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, April 11, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. He was born July 15, 1965, in Independence, IA the son of Sabinus Anthony Buchheit and Helen Marie (Rockwell) Buchheit. He graduated from St. John's High School, Independence, with the class of 1983 and then attended Elsworth Community College at Iowa Falls. In November of 1990, Norman married Debra DeGroote in Cedar Rapids. They later divorced. Norman worked as a salesman and was a regular vendor at farmers markets in Iowa City, Cedar Rapids, and Hiawatha; he also sold sweet corn at the Shueyville corners for 13 years. He began working for his father in the chicken business and later worked for Fareway Food Stores, Amana Refrigeration and operated the Swisher Sinclair Convenience Store for a time. Norman was a member of St. John's Catholic Church in Independence.
Norman is survived by one daughter, Tara Buchheit of Cedar Rapids; one son, Alexander Buchheit of Cedar Rapids, his father, Sabinus "Sonny" Buchheit of Independence; three brothers, David (Rosann) Buchheit of Dyersville, Alan (Kendra) Buchheit of Cedar Falls, Scott (Cindy) Buchheit of Ladson, S.C.; four sisters, Cindy (John) White of Jesup, Jennifer Buchheit of West Des Moines, Deb (Robert) Burger of Marion, Barb (Mark) Haisch of Clive and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his mother Helen in 2011.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 16, at St. John's Catholic Church, Independence, with Fr. Donald J. Plamondon as Celebrant. Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Independence, with Casket Bearers Alexander Buchheit, David Buchheit, Alan Buchheit, Cindy White, Jennifer Buchheit, Scott Buchheit, Debra Burger and Barb Haisch. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the White Funeral Home, Independence, beginning with a Vigil Service at 3 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the family.
