INDEPENDENCE – On Friday, March 25, 2016 another fierce soul was called home. Born to William and Francis "Mae" (White) McMurrin on March 8, 1939 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He married Sharon Leidgh December 21, 1957 in Oxford Junction, Iowa.
Being a retired iron worker (local 89, Cedar Rapids), an arborist and former avid skydiver, Norman was as much at home in the air as he was when his feet were on the ground as a gardener, a naturalist and was a passionate protector of wildlife and their habitats. Norman is survived by his bride Sharon of Otterville, son Greg, Houston, Texas, one sister Pauline Johnstone, Cedar Rapids; three brothers: Robert (Joyce Sampica), Roger (Pam) both of Waterloo and Dewayne (Sharon) of Florida; and a great granddaughter, Christara, being raised by them in Otterville. Norman is also survived by five granddaughters, several great grand children - including Nicholas Bokemeyer of Oklahoma, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by his parents; two sons: Kevin and Rick; a daughter, Joy; four brothers: Wilbur, Albert, Neil and Donny; and one granddaughter, Amber.
It was Norman's request to be cremated and have his ashes "be returned to the soil they came from". There will be a Celebration of Life. Please come and share your memories with Sharon and Christara on Saturday, April 2 from 1 to 4 p.m., at the VFW Post 2440 (128 3rd Av NE) in Independence. Memorials can be directed to the family. White Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
