OELWEIN – Patricia J. Downs, 59, of Oelwein, died on Friday evening, July 5, at Oelwein Health Care Center in Oelwein.
Patricia Joan Downs was born on Nov. 10, 1953 at Independence, the daughter of Leslie V. and Betty (Watts) Downs. She graduated from Independence High School in 1972 and received her B.A. in Social Work from the University of Northern Iowa at Cedar Falls in 1976. Patricia was united in marriage to Rick Sauer and two children were born to this union, Elizabeth and Andrew. Patricia and Rick later divorced. Patricia had previously worked as a social worker at Ravenwood Care Center in Waterloo, Opportunities in Vinton and at Goodwill in Oelwein.
She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and the Democratic Party. Patricia maintained her interest in Girl Scouts throughout her lifetime. She enjoyed her cats and watching movies.
Patricia is survived by her Mother, Betty Downs of Oelwein; two children, Elizabeth Chase of Vinton and Andrew (Jennifer) Sauer of Vinton; four grandchildren; three brothers, Roger (Renee) Downs of Washington, D.C., Steven (Barbara) Downs of Chicago, Ill., and her twin brother, Michael (Roxie) Downs of Altoona.
She was preceded in death by her father.
A memorial service was planned for 11 a.m. Thursday, July 11, at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, Oelwein with Rev. Leo Combs-Lay officiating.
The family greeted friends for visitation one hour before the service at the funeral home. Inurnment will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Independence, at a later date.
A Memorial Fund has been established for Zion Lutheran Church and the Oelwein Health Care Center.
