INDEPENDENCE - Patricia L. Vargason, 81, of Independence, died on Sunday, July 17, at her home following a long illness.
She was born on July 18, 1929, in Lamont, the daughter of Jesse David and Nona Ann (Lewis) Holroyd. She graduated from high school in Lamont in 1946. On June 25, 1947, she and Herschel Ward Vargason were married in Aurora. He preceded her in death in 1991. Mrs. Vargason was a care giver for her family. She was also an active member of the First Baptist Church in Independence for 68 years. She was a former Sunday School teacher and held many offices with the women's circle group.
Mrs. Vargason is survived by six daughters, Sharon (Wilbert "Buster") Tynes of Copperas Cove, Texas, Diana (Edward) Murray of Aurora, Barbara Haas and Carol (Glen) Mills, both of Waterloo, Becky (Billy) Staton of Tama, and Nona (Steven Tory) Cook of Cedar Rapids, and four sons, Alan (Danielle) Vargason of Menifee, Calif., Roger (Bernice) Vargason of Independence, Rick (Cheryl Refshauge) Vargason of Waterloo, and Jeffrey (Rebecca) Vargason of Bondurant, 28 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, and three great great grandchildren. She is also survived by one brother, Thomas (Jackie) Holroyd of Long Beach, Calif., two sisters, Anabel (Donald) Pogue of Iowa City, and Viola Meader of Marion, two brothers-in-law, S.R. "Bob" Gallup of Waterford, Conn., and Marvin (Edna) Mosher of Shellsburg, and one sister-in-law, Billie Vargason of Owatona, Minn.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two grandsons, one brother, and three sisters.
Funeral services were held Thursday, July 21, at the First Baptist Church in Independence. Burial was in Campton Cemetery in Lamont. White Funeral Home in Independence was in charge of the arrangements.
