Raymond D. Hitchens (1919 - 2013)


INDEPENDENCE – Raymond D. Hitchens, 94 years old, of Concord, Calif., formerly of Independence, died on Monday, Aug. 19, at Concord Royale Assisted Living in Concord, Calif. He was born in Independence on Jan. 31, 1919, the son of Irvin and Ada Hitchens, who owned the Hitchens Hotel in Independence. He graduated from the Independence High School in 1937 and served in the U.S. Army during WWII in North Africa, France, and Italy.
Mr. Hitchens is survived by his stepchildren, Mary Agnew of Walnut Hills, California, and James Redmond of Dana Point, California, several step grandchildren and step great grandchildren, and his niece, Jane Hitchens Timm of Winthrop, Iowa.
Mr. Hitchens was a life long Iowa Hawkeye Football fan and enjoyed telling of his trip by train to attend the 1956 Rose Bowl. His body was cremated and his ashes will be buried in Wilson Cemetery in Independence.
