INDEPENDENCE – Russell D. Shannon 75, of Independence, died Monday, April 29, at his home in Independence.
Russell was born on June 17, 1937 in Buchanan County the son of John P. and Myrtie Mae (Diehl) Shannon. He attended the Washington Township 1 elementary School and was a 1956 graduate of the Independence High School; On April 20, 1963 he was united in marriage to Dolores Ann Strief in Hopkinton. The family made their home in Independence. Russell was employed with Micro Switch Co in Independence, Tri Angle Plastics in Winthrop, and John Deere in Waterloo, prior to working for General Mills in Cedar Rapids for 15 years till his retirement in 1999.
He is survived by his wife Dolores A. Shannon, Independence; five children; Pat (Janet) Shannon, Independence, Nancy Kieler, Dubuque, Beth (Randy) Koppes, Iowa City, Mike (Lori) Shannon, Independence, and Tim (Tina) Shannon, Marion, nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents John and Myrtie Shannon; five brothers: Jack, Francis, Don, Richard and Owen Shannon; and a sister, Marge Zieser.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Catholic Church, Independence, with Rev. Don Plamondon officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 8 to 10 a.m. Thursday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence. A Rosary will be recited at 3 p.m. Wednesday and a parish wake service at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
