FORTH WORTH, Texas - Sam Gissel, formerly of Independence, passed away Jan. 16.
Born Nov. 4, 1934 on the family farm to Fred and Leona (Bright) Gissel, he attended country school through the eighth grade and graduated form Independence High School in 1953.
Following high school, Sam served in the U.S. Army, stationed on Okinawa. Returning home, he farmed several years before relocating to Texas where he married the former Joan Andrews, also previously from Independence.
For over a decade, they owned and operated a Hawkeye Hardware, a neighborhood business where many lasting friendships were formed.
From his teen years, Sam had a love for woodworking, which lasted throughout his lifetime.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Daryl "Bud" and an infant daughter, Charlotte Mary.
Survivors include: his wife; a sister, Bernadine de Chaney; three sons: Jeff, Gar and Brad; two daughters: Laura (Mrs. Jim Malone) and Debra; and three grandsons: Brandon Gissel, Ed Malone and Will Malone and nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
