Independence - Steven D. Mace, 63, Independence, died on Friday, April 1, at his home following a long illness.
He was born in Independence on May 19, 1947, the son of Dean LaVerne and Ruth Jane (McClintock) Mace. He graduated from high school in Independence in 1965 and he earned a B.A. degree in marketing from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, in 1972. He served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam. On Dec. 16, 1967, he and the former Sheryl Fay Holtz were married in Independence. They later divorced. On Sept. 5, 2008, he and the former Mary Eileen Keenan were married in Independence. Mr. Mace started working at Roy's Feed and Seed, Independence, while he was still in school. He purchased the business in 1979 and continued as a Pioneer Seed Company dealer. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Independence and the Bechter-Boies V.F.W. Post No. 2440. He was formerly an Independence City Councilman, a Trustee of Wilson Cemetery, and a member of Ducks Unlimited.
Mr. Mace is survived by his wife, Mary; two daughters: Molly (Dwayne Martin) Mace and Katie (J.D.) Wolf, both of Independence; two stepsons: Brad (Patti) Knepper, Littleton, Colo., and Mark Knepper, Highlands Ranch, Colo. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Jacob, Olivia, Sophie, Talia, and Jackson; four step grandchildren: Tyler, Tanner, Faith, and Jake; and a brother, Larry (Jane) Mace, St. Joseph, Mo.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Gretchen.
Funeral Services were held Tuesday, April 5, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Independence. His cremated remains will be interred at Wilson Cemetery in Independence at a later date.
